Unity tutorial 01

Image
Oh the bittersweet taste of Unity after a relaxing break.. This week we are delving right back into the unity tutorials. Unfortunately for me I still struggle completing these tutorials but I am determined to make a conscious effort at them as I know they'll stand to me in all areas of my course.  This semester we are working on 2D games which should be interesting! I love 2D games, especially doodle jump! The first tutorial was all about setting up the software for 2D instead of 3D. As we went on we learned about the main character and making him move.  2D Gaming Unity This tutorial was pretty straight-forward thankfully but I know it is just the beginning. I'm also glad this tutorial didn't include a lot of coding as I still struggle to understand coding.  Lets hope we can keep this momentum going!

What is a Game?

Image
This week I read up on what a game really is.  Well, in the first article I read, "What is a Game, Anyway?" , I learned that there is an array of different ways to define what a game really is. There Is no one definition for a game, it's mostly what you want it to be! The article states that although games are what we want them to be, it's important to notice how intricate games actually are, and the "Critical Vocabulary" to learn when planning to create and analyze one.  It was also interesting to learn how all games usually follow the same structure, they include elements such as activities, rules, conflict, goals, decision making, and more.  Gaming Controller In the next article, "The Organic Nature of Game Ideation" , I was informed on all the different ways to draw inspiration from life for a game.  One section I thought was interesting was when the writer explained how most people just drew inspiration from every day things, mostly "rea

Unity Tutorial 03

This week we furthered our progress with creating a game on unity.  I enjoyed this tutorial for once as I found it made my game look a lot more advanced with just a few steps. We added a health bar to our character and managed to get it to decrease when in contact with a damaging object or an enemy.  The first part I found a little hard as I do still struggle with wrapping my head around coding. I managed to code the five lives and for it to decrease when losing lives. I found this interesting as I remember playing games like this when I was younger.  I found the second part a little easier, I struggled with the coding again but I was so interested by the process that I didn't give up. We created a danger zone for our character and learned how to create a moving enemy to decrease the health bar when it came in contact with our character.  I am starting to get excited to see where these skills will stand to me in the future! Planning - Here we go Again!

Hey Everyone! Welcome back to my blog for semester 2, I hope everyone reading this had an amazing Christmas. It's going to be weird getting back into things and getting back into writing my blog posts but certainly nothing I can't handle! This week we are planning our ideas for the rest of the semester. The topic I decided to write about for the document is "Music in Gaming". Music Waves  I chose this topic because I slighted touched off it in the first semester and thought it was really interesting. I knew I would be able to create a document of high level because it's something I'm interested in. There is a lot of information on this topic to research also which was important to me; I didn't want to run out of stuff to write about. I am also really into my music, which is another reason I chose this! I love music and always have, so that helps!  Here are some keywords I chose to research this topic: Motivation Stamina  Imagery Mood Themes Challenges Str

Games GDD: Games Design Document

Image
This week I learned about Game Design Documents and why they are needed.  Firstly I read an article (here) about the two important factors considered when creating a GDD: Memory Aid and Communication Aid. I found these interesting because it shows that a lot of thought goes into creating games and many people have worked through what works and what doesn't work. I learned that Memory Aid has a very important purpose. As game design is a very long process with a lot of thoughts and executions, it is easy to forget what happened in the early stages of design. Memory Aid takes away the need to try remember if a step has already been taken, as you can just log it into the document and go back and check if needed. Communication Aid is important as there are a lot of people in a team when designing a game. It is easier to have one specific work document / place to work as a team and track the progress together.  There is also a whole load of different teams in game development so it is

Game Elements

Image
This week I read into different game elements.  Firstly, I was really interested in learning about the motive behind Objectives / Goals within games. It is very important, in my opinion, to read into this. Every game must have a goal at the end of it, otherwise why would the player bother playing? It was interesting noting the different objectives that can keep a player engaged such as capturing, destroying, collection, solving, chase, or race!  I read more into this here . This is an interesting read which goes further into detail about all the goals to consider when designing a game.  I also learned about critical analysis. Which is more of a non-biased critical look at the game instead of a "fault-finding" look at it. This read taught me how to analyse a game and give feedback. I will now ask myself questions such as "How is the play of the game?" and "Do the games working parts fit together?" Game Development on Unity   Secondly, I read an academic p

Feedback Thoughts

Image
This week I read two articles on feedback.  The first article I read was Neil Gaiman 's advice on a creative life. In the article I learned about how Gaiman has a different way of looking at mistakes. A good way! It was interesting to think about mistakes as being a tool in our lives to help us move forward and learn. I feel like from such a young age we are taught that making a mistake is a very bad thing, it's something you are worried about doing, feeling like you'll be judged.  Neil has a great way of injecting the idea into our mind that making a mistake is a powerful step in life. I actually wish this read was a bit longer, but it leaves me interested to search more into Neil Gaiman and into his way of thinking. His beliefs are something that I'm very intrigued by. ~ Neil Gaiman The second article I read was How to Get Past Negativity Bias . The article was written by Katrina Schwartz, a journalist from San Francisco who works for MindShift who explore the future
