I just added my twitter page to the sidebar of this blog, to make it easier for you to learn more and more about me as we go on! Have a little stalk, go on, I know you want to!
Oh the bittersweet taste of Unity after a relaxing break.. This week we are delving right back into the unity tutorials. Unfortunately for me I still struggle completing these tutorials but I am determined to make a conscious effort at them as I know they'll stand to me in all areas of my course. This semester we are working on 2D games which should be interesting! I love 2D games, especially doodle jump! The first tutorial was all about setting up the software for 2D instead of 3D. As we went on we learned about the main character and making him move. 2D Gaming Unity This tutorial was pretty straight-forward thankfully but I know it is just the beginning. I'm also glad this tutorial didn't include a lot of coding as I still struggle to understand coding. Lets hope we can keep this momentum going!
For part of my week 2 tasks, I had to dive into the differences between fixed and growth mindsets. I was so happy to see this as part of the tasks for this week because this is something I had read into before. Last year in my acting course, it was almost drilled into us that making mistakes is NOT A BAD THING and is actually a good thing. For example, from a young age I was taught that going to auditions and not getting the part, is not a bad thing! It's all about experiences, and there's so many factors that come into play. Instead I was told that every failed audition is a learning curve towards the right audition and that a "No" now, is because a better "Yes" is coming! (One of my favourite sayings!) A really interesting read on this below: https://actingcoachscotland.co.uk/blog/developing-mindset-acting-success/ I do still believe that in some parts of my life I still have a fixed mindset. For example, with regards to materialistic things like money ...
This week I learned about Game Design Documents and why they are needed. Firstly I read an article (here) about the two important factors considered when creating a GDD: Memory Aid and Communication Aid. I found these interesting because it shows that a lot of thought goes into creating games and many people have worked through what works and what doesn't work. I learned that Memory Aid has a very important purpose. As game design is a very long process with a lot of thoughts and executions, it is easy to forget what happened in the early stages of design. Memory Aid takes away the need to try remember if a step has already been taken, as you can just log it into the document and go back and check if needed. Communication Aid is important as there are a lot of people in a team when designing a game. It is easier to have one specific work document / place to work as a team and track the progress together. There is also a whole load of different teams in game developmen...
